The Jethro Tull Christmas Album
“The Jethro Tull Christmas Album” stands as a unique entry in Jethro Tull’s catalog, where the band embraced the festive spirit with a characteristic twist. Rather than a straightforward collection of carols, the album includes original compositions by Ian Anderson, re-recordings of Tull’s own Christmas-themed material, and some traditional tunes given the Tull treatment.
Ian Anderson remarked, “Christmas is a curious time, full of contradictions. This album was our way of exploring those themes through music. We’ve got songs that deal with the irony of the holiday season, the commercialism, but also the joy and warmth of family traditions.” The album features tracks like “Birthday Card at Christmas”, which humorously tackles the issue of birthdays being overshadowed by Christmas, and “A Christmas Song”, originally from the “Living in the Past” album, now re-recorded with a fuller band arrangement.
The inclusion of instrumental tracks like “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen/Auld Lang Syne” showcases Anderson’s flute in a festive context, blending traditional melodies with Tull’s rock sensibilities. This album captures a more intimate side of the band, offering a blend of satire, warmth, and celebration.
