James has been playing drums since the age of 13. His first band, “Chequered Rain” failed to achieve any real chart success and he moved into the world of sessions. Being based in London, he regularly recorded and performed live with many bands and artists, working in Jazz, Pop and rock genres. In 2002 he worked with Ian Anderson on his “Rubbing Elbows” US tours and has remained on the stool for various projects and tours since.
James played Roland Electronic Drums on the orchestral shows, DW on acoustic shows, Zildjian Cymbals, DW pedals, ProMark drum sticks & rods and Evans drums heads. He uses Shure in-ear monitoring, Hardcase drum cases and Samson Audio.
James formed The Fancy Toys with guitarist Mickaël Téo and recorded and toured Iceland and the UK before disbanding when Mickaël emigrated to Brazil. Most recently, James toured with Ian Anderson in 2013 on the Thick As A Brick tour in Germany to replace Scott Hammond who was out of action following knee surgery.
James has homes in London and Iceland, where he works mainly as Ian Anderson’s agent and co-manager. He promotes IA/Tull tour in the UK and represents a few other artists through his company, Hole Agency. His Icelandic property includes holiday rental at on the edge of Iceland’s Golden Circle, just 45 minutes from Reykjavik.
