Florian Opahle, born February 25, 1983, in Rosenheim, Bavaria, Germany, began playing classical guitar at age five and later trained in electric guitar, attending master classes with Masayuki Kato in 2001 and 2002. After earning his high school diploma in 2002, he pursued a professional music career, performing with German vocalist Masha on her Germany tour and working as a session musician across Europe. In 2003, Opahle joined Ian Anderson’s solo band, touring extensively in Europe, North and South America, and Asia, including the Ian Anderson Plays Orchestral Jethro Tull tour, where he performed with a full orchestra in countries like Italy, Greece, France, and Germany, later captured on a DVD release. He shared stages with artists like Al Di Meola, Greg Lake—appearing on Lake’s 2006 album Live—and Leslie Mandoki.
From 2007 to 2008, Opahle studied music arrangement and composition at the German Pop Academy, enhancing his skills as a producer and songwriter. He contributed to Ian Anderson’s solo albums Thick as a Brick 2 (2012) and Homo Erraticus (2014), often replacing longtime Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre for live performances, including orchestral arrangements of Tull material. From 2017 to 2019, Opahle performed with Anderson’s band under the Jethro Tull name, touring globally to present classic Tull songs and appeared on their 2022 album ‘The Zealot Gene’. He parted ways with Anderson in 2019 to focus on other endeavours, concluding a 16-year association with Anderson’s solo and Tull projects.
Since 2017, Opahle and his wife have operated RedBoxx Studios in southern Germany, where he works as a studio musician, producer, and songwriter for artists like Alexandra Stan and explores flamenco music. His technical proficiency across contemporary rock, classic rock, blues, classical, and flamenco styles, combined with his production expertise, has made him a respected figure in the European music scene. Based in Germany, Opahle continues to create and collaborate, building on his extensive experience with Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull, and other notable artists including the release of his solo album Travels in 2024.
