The Zealot Gene
After nearly two decades without a new studio album under the Jethro Tull name, “The Zealot Gene” marked their return with a collection of songs inspired by biblical themes, but not strictly a concept album. Anderson’s lyrics delve into the complexities of faith, fanaticism, and human nature, often with a critical eye.
“We weren’t making a religious album,” Anderson clarified. “It’s more about exploring the zeal, the passion, and sometimes the extremism that can come with belief systems. ‘The Zealot Gene’ is about that inherent drive in humans to believe, to follow something with such intensity.” The album kicks off with “Mrs. Tibbets”, reflecting on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima through a biblical lens, and includes tracks like “The Zealot Gene” itself, which critiques modern political divisiveness.
Musically, it harks back to some of Tull’s more progressive and folk-influenced works, with Anderson’s flute and acoustic guitar at the forefront, alongside the band’s tight ensemble playing. The album’s reception was generally positive, with critics and fans alike welcoming the band’s thoughtful return to new material.
